Our History

THE HISTORY

AHEPA District 10, known as the Automotive District, was established in the mid-1920s and covers the entire state of Michigan. It has a rich history that highlights its commitment to promoting Hellenism, education, and civic responsibility. The district's first chapter, Alpha Chapter #40, was founded in Detroit in 1924 by twenty-five Americans of Hellenic descent. This chapter played a pivotal role in mentoring and helping establish other AHEPA chapters across Michigan, contributing to the organization's growth statewide. The District has held two national conventions in 1928 and 1948.

Throughout its history, AHEPA District 10 has been heavily involved in various philanthropic activities. Notable contributions include their support for Greek War Relief during World War II and their role in selling U.S. War Bonds. They have also made significant efforts in education through the AHEPA District 10 Educational Foundation, which was founded in 1975. This foundation has awarded over $600,000 in scholarships to more than 600 students.

The district has also participated in numerous cultural and community initiatives, such as the dedication of the statue of Demetrius Ypsilanti in 1928 and the restoration of this monument in 1995. The statue honors Ypsilanti, a Greek general who played a key role in Greece’s struggle for independence. Additionally, members of the district contributed to establishing notable landmarks, such as the statue of Alexander the Great at Wayne State University and the statue of Hippocrates at the University of Michigan.

AHEPA District 10 continues to be an active and vital part of Michigan's Hellenic community, regularly organizing events, conferences, and philanthropic efforts that uphold the values of education, culture, and civic duty.
