OXI DAY STATE OF MICHIGAN COMMERATION 2025

From Representative Phil Skaggs via Facebook: Today I was honored to pass a House Resolution declaring October 28, 2025, as Oxi Day in the State of Michigan.

Greeks around the world commemorate Oxi Day -- the day in 1940 when the Greek Prime Minister responded to Mussolini's demands for surrender with a simple word, "Oxi" ("No" in Greek) -- as a national holiday of pride and determination to sustain the Greek nation and culture against all odds.

The Italian Axis forced invaded Greece within hours after Prime Minister Metaxas’ show of resistance. Despite facing an invading army with ten times their firepower, Greek forces successfully repelled the Italian offensive, forcing Germany to divert troops to the Balkans and delay its invasion of the Soviet Union. Historians have noted that this delay significantly contributed to the ultimate defeat of Nazi Germany.

The Greek people’s refusal to yield to fascist aggression inspired the world, proving that determination and moral resolve can alter the course of history. Oxi Day reminds us of the heroism of the Greek people and the enduring legacy of their stand against European fascism. I'm pleased Michiganders, both Greek-Americans and Philhellenes, continue to celebrate that day 85 years ago when a small nation with a proud history stood up to Mussolini and Hitler and helped save civilization.

I was joined on the House floor by leaders from District 10 of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association: District Governor Othon Economopoulos, Lieutenant Governor Merek Vincent, and Chairman of the Board of Governors James Thomas. I am honored to support AHEPA as they work to preserve Hellenic ideals across our state."

Today, the AHEPA District 10 Lodge, together with Brother James Thomas, proudly joined State Representative and Philhellene Phil Skaggs in recognition of Oxi Day on the floor of the Michigan House of Representatives. The young brothers of the district have been working together hard to get the resolution in recognition of this major historic day for Greeks and the Hellenic Diaspora.

Representative Skaggs offered an official resolution declaring October 28, 2025 as Oxi Day in the State of Michigan, honoring Greece’s historic stand against fascist aggression on October 28, 1940.

He also recognized the Order of AHEPA, District Governor Othon Economopoulos, Lieutenant Governor Merek Vincent, and Chairman of the Board of Governors James Thomas for their leadership in preserving Hellenic ideals across our state.

We extend our sincere appreciation to Representative Skaggs and his office for their partnership and for honoring the Greek-American community that proudly calls Michigan home.
